Circulus Vitae

Circulus Vitae

Nursery school and day-care centre for senior citizens

Texts

The design of welfare infrastructure is always related to the issue of locating public buildings within the urban fabric of a city. This proposal consists of two archetypes; one introverted patio (the atrium) and one extroverted plaza (the forum). It is a composition that intends to create a public building able to function as a protective shell for the sensitive age groups that hosts. At the same time, it contributes to the cohesion of fragmented available space through the main elements of its structure; the Forum and the Atrium. Forum, which is located at the southern part of the plot, attempts to be a social denser that enhances social life and provides social interaction.

The Building’s typology cradles the expanded yard and highlights the archetype of the atrium, which has been used on the island of Crete since antiquity due to climate conditions.

The Building and the yard are divided into two levels. The first level accommodates the kindergarten, while the senior’s day-care center is located at the second level. An amphitheater in the middle of the atrium intends to connect first and second level yards.
